- Deck Officer Class 1 Certificate - Master
In addition to the theoretical foundation, further seagoing service is required for certification at the different levels as required by the STCW95 Convention.

Mandatory practical training on visual bridge simulators, process simulators and Dynamic Position simulators where various types of ships and operational conditions can be simulated.
In addition lectures, independent work and practical training in laboratory.
Structure and activities
Nautical studies consist of a combination of science courses, social studies and certificate-oriented courses. This provides a broad and relevant background for offshore as well as onshore professions.
Scientific and basic maritime subjects are introduced to the students during the 1st educational year at the College. The course units are designed to focus on scientific approaches to maritime questions. The 1st educational year forms a required theoretical basis necessary for the students to have full advantage of the practical experience at sea in the second optional year.
The graduates have acquired the necessary theoretical education, which together with the required on board training entitles them to apply for watchkeeping certificates deck. After additional sea service as watchkeeping officers they are entitled to apply for the highest maritime certificates at the management level and, if granted, thereafter use the title Master.
The College also offers an optional extra year of seagoing service after the first year at the College. The necessary trainee places are obtained in corporation between Aalesund University College, shipping companies in the region and The Norwegian Shipowners' Association.
