The School arranges internal exams in which basic practical nursing skills are tested. Students are required to pass these before they are allowed to start their clinical practice placement periods.
Written descriptions of the purpose, aims and requirements of the clinical practice placements are prepared by the School of Nursing in cooperation with representatives from the various hospitals and community health services where clinical practice is undertaken. The School maintains a close relationship with healthcare institutions in all parts of the Sunnmøre area.
Programme Content and Organisation
The undergraduate nursing programme is a full-time course of study totalling 180 ECTS credits over 3 years (60 credits per year). In each year, the students are divided into 4 classes. These classes have different paths of study in terms of the completion of different courses for each year. Each class is then divided into 4 groups, with 15 students in each group. These groups serve as counselling groups with a particular focus on the development of a professional nursing identity among the participants. The counselling groups are further divided into 3 core groups, which are mainly used for various types of curricular group work. These classes and groups are established early in the first term of study.
The programme is organized in terms of three units:
1st year of study: An introduction to nursing. Basic nursing.
2nd year of study: Nursing in community health care.
3rd year of study: Nursing in hospitals/specialist health care.
The curriculum is divided into 4 main topic areas throughout the 3-year degree programme. Each topic area is further divided into various courses. Clinical practice placements are an integral part of all the main topic areas.
The 4 main topic areas are:
The professional and scientific basis of nursing - 33 ECTS credits
Professional nursing - 72 ECTS credits
Biomedical and Life Sciences - 45 ECTS credits
Social Sciences - 30 ECTS credits
The curriculum consists of 10.000 pages, divided between theoretical and practice studies. 3 ECTS credits requires approximately 80 hours of study.
